A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that lifts, reshapes, and repositions the breasts and nipples to provide a fuller and more youthful appearance. Pregnancy, age, weight loss, and other factors can cause breasts to sag and droop over time. But with a breast lift from double board-certified plastic surgeon Alfred Sofer, MD, it’s possible to return your breasts to their former appearance, increasing your confidence and satisfaction with your body.

CONSULTATION WITH DR SOFER
Dr. Sofer knows that every body is different, and every patient has different goals. Therefore, your consultation will be focused on your wants and needs, and how our practice can provide you with the highest quality care. We will discuss what you hope to achieve with your breast lift procedure and present you with several surgical techniques and options to accomplish your desired outcome. We will also review your medical history and perform a brief physical examination to confirm that you are a good candidate for the procedure.
We will review the available breast lift incision techniques and decide which one will best suit your needs.
These techniques include:
-
Periareolar Incision: Used to address instances of minor breast sagging, this technique involves making a small incision around the upper part of the areola to lift the breast. The periareolar incision leaves minimal scarring.
-
Circumareolar Incision: Similar to the periareolar incision, the circumareolar incision goes around the full border of the areola to address instances of minor breast sagging, while also allowing for areolar size reduction.
-
Vertical Incision: This incision goes around the border of the areola and then downward to the base of the breast. This technique allows the surgeon to address mild to moderate breast sagging as well as remove excess skin to create a more youthful contour.
-
Anchor Incision: Providing the best results for moderate to severe breast sagging, the anchor incision goes around the areola, down to the base of the breast, and then along the crease at the bottom of the breast – creating a shape reminiscent of an anchor. This incision gives the surgeon maximum control over the breast reshaping process and can make for the most dynamic and noticeable results.
When considering any surgical procedure, it’s normal to experience anxiety about safety or potential complications. But you can rest assured that the breast lift procedure is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures in the country, with a low rate of complication and a high rate of patient satisfaction. (1) We encourage you to ask any questions or share any concerns you have during and after your initial consultation. We believe that an open line of communication between doctor and patient is the key to a successful and stress-free procedure, and we want your experience with us to be as enjoyable as possible.
PREPARATION
Before your breast lift, we may instruct you to make certain lifestyle changes to ensure a smooth and successful procedure. These may include refraining from smoking, drinking alcohol, or taking certain medications. We may also coordinate with your primary care physician to learn about any significant medical history.
We will also ask you to designate a caregiver who can assist you in the hours and days following your breast lift. This person will be expected to transport you home, as you will not be permitted to drive immediately after your procedure. They should also be on hand to help you perform any postoperative care instructions and to monitor the early stages of your recovery.
BREAST LIFT PROCEDURE
Your breast lift procedure will take place in one of our two state-of-the-art facilities in Fairfield or White Plains. The procedure typically takes between 2 and 3 hours, depending on the specific surgical techniques you will have previously discussed and agreed upon with your surgeon.
For your procedure, you will either be placed under general anesthesia, or intravenous sedation with local anesthesia. We will discuss the best option for you well in advance of your procedure.
Once the procedure is underway, the surgeon will make the incisions according to the previously chosen technique. Then, he will go about reshaping and repositioning the breast tissue to create a fuller and more youthful form. At this time, he will make any agreed-upon adjustments to the size and placement of the areolas. The surgeon will also remove excess skin, and tighten the remaining skin to achieve the desired lift. He will then close the incisions, dressing them with sterile and supportive bandages and adhesives to help your skin begin to heal from the procedure.
YOUR RECOVERY
After your breast lift procedure is complete, you will be able to return home as soon as the effects of anesthesia have started to wear off. The recovery process after a breast lift is different for every patient. Most will experience mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising immediately after surgery, which should begin to subside in a matter of days.
You should avoid strenuous physical activity and exercise for at least four weeks, or longer if instructed by your surgeon, to give your body time to properly heal. Our office will schedule follow-up appointments with you as needed to monitor your recovery, and we will also have you wear a support bra that will help minimize swelling and maintain the results of the breast lift.
Many patients are understandably concerned about scarring in the aftermath of their breast lift. All breast lift procedures will result in some degree of scarring, which varies based on the incision techniques used. Periareolar and circumareolar incisions tend to result in minimal scarring, due to the smaller size and location of the incisions; however, these incisions are not always able to address moderate to severe breast sagging. Vertical and anchor incisions will likely leave thin scars on the breasts, but with time and proper postoperative care, these scars will fade and begin to blend with your natural skin tone within a year. (2) There are a variety of advanced treatments and therapies that can help with scar healing, which our team can discuss with you.
ADITIONAL PROCEDURES
A breast lift is intended to accentuate the shape and position of your breasts at their current size. If you’re also interested in increasing the size of your breasts, it can be highly effective for your surgeon to perform breast augmentation at the same time as your breast lift.
Undergoing both procedures simultaneously can often lead to better aesthetic results, greater patient satisfaction, and shorter overall recovery times when compared to completing the procedures separately. Dr. Sofer’s team is highly experienced with breast lifts, breast augmentations, as well as a variety of other cosmetic procedures. We are happy to explore your options during your consultation.
HOW MUCH IS A BREAST LIFT?
The cost of a breast lift will vary for each patient, as it is dependent on several factors unique to their individual treatment plan. These factors include the techniques used during the procedure, the type of anesthesia required, and the extent of the surgery needed to achieve the desired results.
During your consultation with Dr. Sofer, he will thoroughly evaluate your specific needs and discuss your aesthetic goals in detail. This will allow him to provide you with an accurate estimate for the price of your breast lift procedure.
